Have you ever been on a project, where in the rush to get started, no one asked the most basic set of questions – why are we doing this? What is the goal? What are we trying to achieve?
Have you seen projects that spent millions on getting a COTS product up and running, only to fail because no one through to address data quality before migrating the data from the old to the new? Or the obvious changes in existing business processes that would be needed? Or the organizational structures that would be needed? Or the gap in skills that it would need to be addressed?
Why does this continue to happen? Because far too many still don’t take a step back and ask Why are we doing this? What are we trying to achieve. I am pretty sure the why it isn’t to install an COTS product.
Do we know the business outcomes we are seeking? Do we know what benefits we would realize if we achieved those outcomes? Do we know what we need to do and the the order in which we need to do it? Do we realize that we have a portfolio and maybe even multiple programmes instead of a single project? Do we know the strategic goals we are targeting? Are we willing to adjust our direction during execution based on the things we learn along the way?
